Living with arthritis

Living with arthritis
Nearly 37 million Americans suffer from one of the different types of arthritis or rheumatism. Only a small number of people will experience a deep old age, without joining this club. To be honest, there is no cure, but there are steps that you can take, to improve your health and have more control of your life. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and rheumatism and also so many causes. In the known diseases mentioned are osteoarthritis (inflammation of the bones and joints), rheumatic arthritis, gout, and lupus.

Osteoarthritis is characterized by decay and loss of cartilage. Cartilage is the tough tissue, which divides the bones in the joints from each other and bends them. If the cartilage is worn, the bones scrape against each other, making the situation worse. In the case of osteoarthritis breakdown of cartilage is accompanied by minimal inflammation, and bone that is underneath becomes increasingly harder. Sooner or later every one of us gets affected by it in the old age.

On the other hand, rheumatic arthritis is not inevitable aspect of aging. From so far unknown reasons, it leads to infection of the skin on joints. This causes pain, swollenness; feeling of heat, affected place turns red. When you have gout, it comes to accumulation of needlelike crystals of uric acid in joints. The reason for this is interference in the possibility of body to burn purine or move it. Purine is a chemical, which is contained in foods such as liver, kidneys and pilchard. This disease mainly affects men over 35 years, who have excessive weight and are inactive.
In contrast, lupus affects mostly women. This disease occurs as the body defense system attacks healthy cells. Symptoms are broadly spread from pain in the joints through inflammation in the mouth, to chronic fatigue.
Although you cannot cure your problems, you can apply a range of measures, it will make you become more active and have more control over your life.
