Arthritis - Estrogen is protecting women

Arthritis - Estrogen is protecting women
Uric arthritis affects mainly adult males. Climax in appearance of disease is the fifth decade of life, and is declining from the sixth decade onwards. Rarely occurs in children and women before menopause. This is connected with continuous mild increase in levels of uric acid in serum of men from childhood onwards, and in women values remain practically equal to the menopause, when they start to grow. Additional reason for no appearance of gout during the reproductive age of women is probably the result of action of estrogen, which stimulate secretion of uric acid to kidneys.
In developed countries the number of the patients with
uric arthritis is higher, which is attributed to a higher standard of living and related way of eating and living. Finding of elevated levels of uric acid is relatively common, but it is considered that of about 30 people, only one will develop symptoms of arthritis.
